NWA-MULAMULA: LOBOLA ’19 BY RICH MNISI

South African designer Rich Mnisi has released his 2019 lookbook called NWA-MULA MULA which translates to “looking for mother”. With his Grandmother as his muse, the designer says he draws inspiration from the African mother and her attributes as the cornerstone in the family.

Making use of bright colours and experimenting with patterns, Rich Mnisi describes his inspiration with the following statement: “In the spirit of imagining an ancestor into existence, this is dedicated to my artistic muse and the place where I draw inspiration – I sought to imagine her into existence, through a daydream of her role as a matriarch set against the backdrop of a Lobola ceremony… My pieces reflected highlights of colour, textures, gifts and prints that are reminiscent of this daydream; symbolic of the packaging that transports me back home…”
