BINGE-WORTHY AFRICAN TV SHOWS TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND

SHUGA

Long-running pan African television drama series, MTV Shuga is a hit show which tells the tale of sex, friendship & despair. It focuses on the lives of young African millennials, as they navigate their way through their adolescent years and you have 5 seasons to catch up on! Fusing family planning, contraception, HIV prevention & sexual health education and highlighting the incidence of gender-based violence, the Tv series centres around topics relevant to the modern African society, especially urban youth culture. The show features Sharon Ezeamaka, Timini Egbuson and Jemima Osunde.

SKINNY GIRL IN TRANSIT

Skinny Girl in Transit is a Bridget Jones style web series produced by Ndani TV, and as the name implies, it is a comedy about a young Nigerian woman and her efforts to lose weight and find love. The romantic series is back for a fourth season and you will definitely love the comedic antics and relatability of cast members Abimbola Craig, Ngozi Nwosu, Sharon Ooja Egwurube, Chioma Okoli and Abisola Aiyeola.

SUMU LA PENZI

Sumu La Penzi is a Kenyan Swahili, melodrama that premiered in 2013 in Africa Magic Swahili. It has Serah Ndanu, Joyce Maina, Naomi Ng’ang’a and Judith Nyambura as the female leads. It is a show that majorly takes prostitution, promiscuity and ambition as its major themes. It follows the life of three urban women, their mishaps and their adventures as they prey on high-flying men of the city to fund their expensive lifestyles. These women, Mariam, Eva and Tindi trawl on social gatherings, bars and even their friends’ workplaces with their feminine charms, often scoring ridiculously rich married men of the city.  You will fall in love with the different ways each of the characters are portrayed, keep your eyes on Mariam!

This TV series stars Omoni Oboli, Dakore Akande, Uzor Osimkpa, Stevel Marc, Chris Attoh, Wale Ojo, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Timini Egbuson, Palesa Setlhare among others. It explores a typical week in the lives of 4 African Women approaching the golden age of ‘Fifty and are at the pinnacle of their careers. Tola, Elizabeth, Maria and Kate are four friends forced at midlife to take inventory of their personal lives while juggling careers and family against the sprawling backdrop of the upper-middle-class neighbourhoods of Ikoyi and Victoria Island in Lagos.
