The SCHICK team caught up with the newest face in the MTV Base clique, Olayinka Oladiran, popularly known as K’Ola. The 23-year-old became the new MTV Base VJ in September 2016, taking over from predecessor, Dadaboy Ehiz. Find out all about her secret favourite Big Brother housemate, what it’s really like working under the spotlight, and her relationship (*ahem*) with DJ Spinall.
What’s the hardest thing about working in TV?
Time management. As a creative, I have a thousand and one things I want to do in a day, from script writing, to acting, radio, directing, producing, etc., but reality sets in that I only have 24 hours. So I try to take it one day at a time.
Which one celebrity woman’s wardrobe would you kill to have?
I am obsessed with a lady named Draya Michele. She and I have similar body types and I love the way she puts her pieces together. She always looks great without trying too hard!
What would the perfect weekend look like?
I’m a really simple girl. I am the happiest when I’m around my friends and family, so anything involving them would be awesome. Chilling at home or at the National Harbour down in [Washington] DC. Great music, food, drinks, laughs, and positive vibes.
The song no one would believe you have on your iPod is…
[Laughs] My friends are actually going to get on me for this one, but it’s Konko Below by Lagbaja. My parents are such huge fans of his and it rubbed off on me. Whenever this song comes on, I can’t help but dance! Playing it is one of the fastest ways to get me out of a funk.
What two words describe your personal style?
Sexy and sophisticated. Personally, when it comes to style, I never feel the need to do too much. I embrace my African curves, so naturally it comes of as sexy and sophisticated because it’s always good to leave a little to the imagination.
Regular jeans or distressed jeans?
Lately, I’ve been all about the distressed jeans. I have so many old jeans that it’s now a pet project of mine to turn them all into distressed jeans, instead of just throwing them out!
Bucket bag or structured handbag?
Structured handbag… and a big one at that! I could literally live out of my bag, so I need a big one where I can fit any and everything.
Heels or sneakers?
Sneakers! I beg, I can’t go and kill myself!
Would you ever date someone in the Nigerian entertainment industry?
Never. Nothing against the guys in the industry, but I don’t p*uck where I work. Having a good relationship with these guys is one of the major parts of my job; I would never want to put myself in a compromising position. Big ups to the ones that do, but it’s just not my cup of tea.
Who’s the most famous person that follows you on Instagram?
Right now, I’d have to say DJ Spinall. He is more than just an IG friend. Him and I are very close and he’s one of my greatest supporters. All around great guy!
Writing in a notepad or taking notes on your phone?
My phone. I always have it on me and it backs ups everything. Some of my greatest and scariest ideas are on there.
In an alternate universe, what job would you love to have?
I would have loved to be a clinical psychologist. I actually have one of my Bachelor’s degrees in clinical psychology. I find mental disorders – especially schizophrenia – to be extremely fascinating. The mind is a powerful thing, and it is scary when it feels like your own mind is attacking you; not being able to know what is real despite being able to see it and feel it.
What’s Ehiz [MTV Base presenter and ex-VJ] really like?
Ehiz is an absolute goofball. He always finds a way to make a joke out of any situation! It’s an interesting time when he is around.
Who were you secretly rooting for on Big Brother Naija?
Honestly, I didn’t really watch the show, but from what I saw on social media, I wanted T-Boss to win. She just seemed to be the most entertaining and carefree.
First thing you would do if you won N25,000,000… ?
Pay off student loans. It’s amazing to me that we live in a world where they punish you for getting an education to help better the world that you live in.
Music or movies?
[Hesitates] This is a hard one. I’ll have to say music. It’s the ultimate escape and the soundtrack to life!
What’s the one thing you can’t stand in a guy?
Lies. Once you start lying, I lose respect for you – point, blank, period.
The best celeb interview you’ve ever had is… ?
This is hard because I’ve had lots of great interviews, but I’ll have to go with DJ Spinall (again). I think with him, it was the most natural one because it’s just two friends being silly. I had him on my music countdown show, Official Naija Top Ten, and we had everyone cracking up!
Would you go without makeup for one year for charity?
Definitely. In my regular life, 9 out of 10 times you’ll probably see me with no makeup on. Makeup is a part of my job, it’s not a part of me. Charity and philanthropy is at the heart of who I am, so I would do it without a second thought.
Runtown or YCEE?
Oh, YCEE. He is my guy and very down to earth. I’ve never met Runtown but his music is dope.
What’s the longest amount of time you’ve spent without your phone in the last one week?
45 minutes, because I was shooting Official Naija Top Ten. (To be fair, it wasn’t on me but it was definitely in the room. My phone is bae!)
