5 AFRICAN DESIGNERS WE’LL BE LOOKING OUT FOR AT LAGOS FASHION WEEK 2018

From show-stopping performances to reimagined classics, Lagos Fashion Week delivers it all.

The sartorial ritual takes over the city every year, setting into motion a new cycle of trends that will trickle down throughout fashion for the rest of the year.

Just like every season, we’re looking forward to the fashion trends, beauty looks and runway moments that are sure to inspire us for at least the next six months. As we get ready to see what’s in store for Spring 2019, we wanted to highlight some of the designers we’re especially excited about.

Jermaine Bleu

Jermaine Bleu is the emerging brand that uses its pieces to tell a visual story of modern African culture. This Ghanaian brand presents an array of edgy meets modern looks in its collections and their pieces feature high slits, unique patterns, bold colours, pleats on flared pants and much more. The brand simply means ‘the blue girl’ which was derived from the French word ‘bleu’ and you can depict this colour in most of their collections.

Tongoro Studio

Bold, daring and carefree, Senegalese fashion brand Tonogoro Studio is the creative brainchild of Sarah Diouf who is championing the ‘Made in Africa’ label in the global market. Sarah has taken African fashion to great heights with her comfortable, stylish approach to tailoring.  We’ve seen their pieces on fashion favourites like Victoria’s Secret model and African beauty Maria Borges, lifestyle and travel blogger Serra Bellum, creative curator Cassandra Twala and even 2018 TED senior fellow Saran Kaba Jones so there’s no denying that Tonogor Studio delivers vibrant pieces with a bit of edge

Emmy Kasbit

Emmy Kasbit showcased at the South African Menswear Fashion Week in 2016 and 2017, he was also featured at number 8th on the BlackNBold Young Designers list of 2016, emerged as one of the top 5 finalists for Lagos Fashion & Design Week Fashion Focus 2017 and had a great showcase at the fashion week. His collection shown at the HLFDW 2017 runway was one of the most vibrant and innovative uses of traditional Igbo fabric Akwete which catapulted him right into the circle of champions. He recently styled Theresa May for her official trip to Nigeria.

Cynthia Abila

Cynthia Otiyo-Abila is the creative director of Cynthia Abila studios. She has always been passionate about Arts, cultures and human diversity. Her desire for creativity led her to take short courses in garment making and fashion illustrations at the University of Arts, London. She eventually set up the womenswear brand, Cynthia Abila in 2016. She participated in Fashion Focus 2017, a platform showcasing emerging talents in Africa and was selected as one of the finalists. She combines love for simplicity with functional aesthetics to create a modern feminine outlook.

Bello Edu

Bello Edu was founded in 2014 and is run by creative lead Alima Bello. Clenching an award for Emerging Fashion Brand at Ghana’s Fashion Award, 2015, this Ghanaian based brand wishes to appeal to the woman that exudes confidence whilst lusting for life’s best. The message of the brand is quality over quantity, preferring minimalism to excess. They achieve this by merging function with design. The aesthetics of the clothes show versatility and longevity in its pieces. The company manufactures their pieces in Ghana and collects fabrics from all over to release two main collections a year.
