10 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT OUR COVER STAR MAYOWA NICHOLAS

In SCHICK Magazine’s 2017 Fashion Issue, we have a chat with Africa’s leading muse, Mayowa Nicholas, a seasoned model who has made an outstanding mark in the fashion world, ruling the local and international scene one fierce campaign at a time. The striking model talks to SCHICK, revealing more on turning the runway into her oyster, dating and what makes her story so special. We decided to share some tidbits from our conversation with you and share 10 things you may, or may not know about our cover star.

No. 1: The Nigerian born model has walked in over 100 shows, shattering glass ceilings and breaking boundaries within a short time in her career.

No. 2: The ambitiously driven lady finished secondary school and applied to university at the age of 13- yes, 13!

No. 3: She was accidentally scouted by Beth Model Management at the age of 16 in her second year of university and in 2014, competed and won the Elite Model Look Nigeria, a modelling competition by Beth Model Management. This propelled her to worldwide stardom.

No. 4: She studied Accounting at university.

No. 5: She is the first of three children

No. 6: She has a stellar catalogue that includes walking with countless notable fashion houses like Tom Ford, Bridget Awosika, Oscar De La Renta, Prada, Lisa Folawiyo, Miu Miu, Dior, Hermès, Ralph Lauren and much more.

No. 7: Mayowa was handpicked to walk in the 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion show in Shanghai this fall, however, she was unable to walk the show due to visa complications.

No. 8: Speaking of relationships, she believes: “I think people have this misconception that models get guys easily but it’s so hard. First of all, we move around too much to keep anything stable, we think we’ll be back home in two months but our booker could keep us for another four months and then you don’t get to see your boyfriend. It’s really difficult for models to keep a good relationship”.

No. 9: She calls herself a Unicorn, she believes Unicorns are really special, and she says “I’d like to think my story is special”.

No. 10: She believes that no matter where she is, or who she is surrounded by, “I still have my Nigerianness grounded in me”
