Go behind the scenes of your favourite fashion shoots and witness a day in the life of incredible designers with these must-see fashion documentaries.

Learn about the “dirt-to-shirt” steps that it takes for clothing to come to life with these fashion documentaries. So, if you’re looking for shows or movies to binge on, I suggest taking a look at the exciting world of fashion and all that it has to offer. Educate yourself a little on just how much fashion influences you and everything around you. Learn all about what exactly goes into creating a whole fashion magazine or a whole haute couture show before you say that fashion is silly and unimportant.

No. 1: Dior and I

This movie is a classic for the fashion documentary community. It pulls you in and shows you the inside of the house of Dior. In April of 2012, Raf Simons was announced as the new creative director for Christian Dior. This means that he was now the head designer of the brand.

The documentary was released in 2015 and followed Simons through the process of putting together his first haute couture collection as the new artistic director. The intricacy and all of the people and work that go into putting on such a fantastic fashion show is so interesting to watch. This film also gives background information on Dior’s roots and beginnings, as well as how the brand has changed the fashion world.

No. 2: Unzipped

This 1995 documentary goes behind the scenes on what it’s like for a designer to make a collection from scratch: the inspiration, the selection of fabrics, choosing models, producing the actual show, and everything else in between.

The designer you get to follow on his creative journey is Isaac Mizrahi. He is a fairly well-known designer with a contagious, bubbly personality that draws you into the movie and gets you involved. Mizrahi’s daring vision and “way-out” style produce an amazing show that has to be watched with awe.

No. 3: The September Issue

Follow the life of Anna Wintour as she plans the Vogue September 2007 issue with her team. Cameos from Oscar de la Renta, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld and Vera Wang make it even more of a must-watch! This fashion documentary shows what goes on behind the scenes when creating the biggest issue of the year and the effort it takes to make a Vogue publication come to life. It’s also kinda interesting seeing Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington get annoyed at each other, I won’t lie.

No. 4: Christian Louboutin: The World’s Most Luxurious Shoes

Calling all shoe lovers! Christian Louboutin (the most famous shoe designer in the world) is the subject of a fashion documentary that you need to watch IMMEDIATELY. This is a year in the life of a shoe designer, including his celebrity clients and his outgoing personality! If you dream of owning a pair of Louboutins, let this be extra inspiration for you.

No. 5: The Boy Who Made Shoes For Lizards

The Boy Who Made Shoes For Lizards follows one of fashion’s most acclaimed shoemakers, Manolo Blahnik, as his business continues to flourish. With a who’s who of the fashion industry – Rihanna, Naomi Campbell, John Galliano, Karlie Kloss – singing the Vogue cover star’s well-soled praise, it’s a must-watch for anyone who has or dreams of owning Manolo’s mules and more. The documentary can be watched at Curzon cinemas until the end of October. So, strap on the stilettos and trot along soon.
