If we’ve learned anything from 2017’s wild and wacky fashion, it’s to expect the unexpected. Austere minimalism went out the window in favour of a magpie-like love of glitz, glamour, and granny-chic style. Spring is now in the air, and also in fashion! With a bevvy of Spring/Summer 2018 showcases from South Africa to Lagos, your trend list ought to be full. But, just in case they aren’t, a collaborative power team have put together a stunning fashion editorial titled ‘Welcome to Spring’. Shot by Femi Alabede of ‘Alfe Studios’, we go behind the editorial to see what inspired the images. Enjoy!
Q1: What made you go into photography?
As a lover of art, painting portraits, I bought my first camera with the aim to take quality pictures of my artworks, but later on, in my journey, I found myself taking pictures of people around me and I fell in love with it!. Photography then became an avenue for me to express myself better.
Q2: What elements inspired the ‘Welcome to Spring’ Fashion Editorial?
Actually, major credits for this editorial goes to the amazing stylist – Kayito Nwokedi. I had reached out to him in admiration of his works and sent him a mood board of images and styles I would love to work on,..he refined them and came up with the idea of this editorial. As its spring season in parts of the world, we pulled S/S 18 outfits from a few fashion brands, some of which were exhibited at last year’s Lagos Fashion and Design Week.
Q3: How do you approach your own style of photography? What inspires you every day?
I love to experiment with lighting and I love designing sets. Each day, I observe my environment/location taking into consideration how the sun penetrates a room, or how the ambient light flatters a subject, etc; and I take all this to the studio or wherever I’m doing a shoot, and use it to create my fashion photographs. I also constantly observe works of other visual artists; photographers and videographers – there’s always something to learn.
Q4: Who did you collaborate with for this Editorial and why?
I collaborated with:
– Stylist, Kayito Nwokedi who is highly creative with his styling and this is our first project working together.
– Models from Fowler Models agency, who were very professional and fun to work with.
– Kofoworola Adu, our make up artist for the day and one of my favourites to work with as we have done several projects together.
